General Practitioners (GPs)
Your local Doctors' surgery (or GP practice) provides a wide range of family health services, including, advice on health problems, vaccinations and prescriptions for medicines. Most surgeries can also provide family planning/contraception services, care during pregnancy, child health checks and immunisations, health promotion/health screening services, such as smear tests and well person checks and minor operations and procedures.
It is important to attend for appointments, or notify the surgery if you have to cancel or change it.
Need a GP out of hours?
If you need to contact your doctor out of their normal opening hours, please call the normal surgery telephone number where you will be given the contact number for an Out of Hours service.
How to Register with a GP
- Use the search page and put in your postcode
- You may contact any GP from the list and ask to register with him/her
- When you go to register please take your medical card with you. If you do not have a medical card the surgery will have a form (GMS1) for you to complete. Please ensure that you enter all the details about your previous GP on the form

If you are refused registration, you should ask for the reason and request this in writing as GPs are contracted to provide this information to you.

Please state your full name, date of birth and names of all the GPs you have approached. It would be helpful if you can provide a daytime telephone number in case we need to contact you.
If you need treatment before you have registered with a GP you may approach any GP practising under the NHS and request emergency treatment.
